Introducing you to our senior business development manager, Gregor Cumming

When he is not promoting ICT solutions, senior business development manager at our Dumfries office, Gregor Cumming, can be found playing ice hockey or providing technical support to his motor sport clients.

‘I have always focused on building relationships with like-minded, driven people and that is why I enjoy being part of the Activ family and playing team sports.’

Outside of work I can be found at my local ice rink playing for Lowland Raiders, a recreational ice hockey team. We meet and train twice a week. Some great friendships built through a shared dedication to the sport.

I also enjoy supporting clients competing within the motorsport sector and you may be surprised to know that one of my best friends is TV personality, Nick Knowles. We met 15 years ago at Silverstone racing circuit and get to as many events as possible during the sporting season.

Reflecting over my career, it all began when I left college having studied computer programming for two years. During my studies I worked with BHS and, although my first career choice was IT, I was offered a super opportunity in the form of a management placement.

This saw me spend six months on placement in London where I banked a range of sales and retail experience. My career at BHS spanned eight years.

I learned a great deal working in the retail sector progressing quickly from a retail consultant on the shop floor to a divisional trading manager.

I found retail helped hone my interpersonal skills. It was dynamic, people focused and the challenge of creating new profitable revenue streams really motivated me.

I was presented with an opportunity to transfer from clothing retail into the technology sector and joined Atlas Communications. I worked with Atlas for 22 years holding the position of head of sales.

I had known managing director, Ian Gillespie, at Activ Technology for a number of years and when he approached me about leading the team at the new Dumfries office I knew this was the right decision for me.

I had the support of my clients as well as the backing of the fantastic team at Activ. I could have worked elsewhere, however, the opportunity to form a regional team with former colleagues from Atlas Communications made perfect sense.

It was a fresh challenge and I am joined by senior engineer and technical consultant, Michael Quinn, business support advisor, Jade Nicol. Hasabe Qamar and Russell Layden, technical assistants.

Going forward, I want to secure and grow business from our existing base as well as develop opportunities with new clients.

Evolving technologies remains the biggest driver in the business and the ICT sector. The Internet of Things has proven that everything is connected. It now enables devices, applications and ‘people’ to connect, interact and exchange information. This presents us with significant opportunities.

As we progress, I am looking forward to growing the team and welcoming like-minded individuals on the Activ journey.
